I’ve been told by Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson that the best things in life are free. But what can you get for free these days.
Like most of the young generation we spend our money on nights out, concerts, festivals the whole shebang. However before I commit to a night out I always find myself tossing up between the positives and negatives.
Negatives always being how much the cab ride will be, how much entry will be, how much will I spend on drinks and a girls got to eat, so how much will I spend on food.
In saying that I know others that can relate to my struggles.
Money is mainly the reason on why we think twice about leaving the house. If we leave, the night will send us broke, if we stay home it’s another missed experience.
A standard price of $60 is what you can expect to pay for entry into a day or night event, with no food or drink included. Festival tickets can be $500 plus now days, many agreeing that the price for major concert tickets are insane. America has shown that ticket prices for events have increased by 20% between the year 2010 and 2015.
‘Selfless’ however a Melbourne based crew that mix event management, underground artist promotion and charity work are giving us reason to smile again.
After following their socials over the past two months to see what all the fuss is about, they proved they know how to host free and successful events. From free day parties to free juice stands at markets, the Selfless team live to give.
With all events they host, a donation is appreciated on entry, however is not compulsory “this is a free event with an option to donate, any profit on donations will be directed towards a charity”.
Saturday the 13th of April I attended the Selfless Summer Series 003: End of Summer FREE Day Party. With no concerns about how much I would have to pay on entry, I made my way to The Third Day in North Melbourne.
The event started at 2pm but seeing as I have a tendency in being fashionably late, I rocked up at 3.30pm.
Walking through the doors of the enormous warehouse space and graffiti art covered walls, ‘The Third day’ was an impressive space.
Selfless had organised eleven DJ’s to headline the event, ensuring there was nothing short of variety when it came to the music.
Food was sorted with the ‘Live your Lemon’ food truck selling gourmet toasties. A rocket, cheese and tomato toasty went done just perfectly for me after a few drinks.
‘Live your Lemon’ also had fresh juices on offer, satisfying any non-alcoholic drinkers.
With my many trips to the bar, I found that drinks were reasonably priced; lines were long but moved at a sensible pace.
Only bummer that I tend to always find a problem was the toilet line. Once I’ve broken the seal like many other women, I need to go time after time and the wait is a head doer.
Toilets aside my experience at the Selfless Summer Series event was notable. 12am was my cut off time, my feet unable to boogie any longer. The nature of the Selfless crew and there willingness to give is infectious. They allow everyone to enjoy the party, minus the costly entry fee. The opportunity to donate allows people to give money to those who need it most rather then give it to a club or venue.
I hope that other event management teams realise the good that the Selfless team bring and take some of their values on board.
Keep your eyes peeled for more FREE events that Selfless organise throughout the year, you won’t be disappointed.
